J. E. Holmes, after 42 years of practice, is Of Counsel to the firm carrying a reduced active civil litigation case load. Mr. Holmes is experienced in all forms of complex tort litigation with emphasis in public entity liability, products liability, construction liability and general civil litigation. Mr. Holmes has extensive jury trial experience. Mr. Holmes was elected into the American Board of Trial Advocates and has held the following offices in the organization: Director, National Board; Director, State Board; San Bernardino-Riverside County Chapter President, Vice President, Secretary and Board Member. Mr. Holmes has an AV Martindale Hubbell rating.

Mr. Holmes was admitted to the California Bar in 1968, after earning his J.D. degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Mr. Holmes is admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court; U.S. District Court of Appeals – Ninth Circuit; U.S. District Courts – Northern, Southern and Eastern Districts; U.S. Court of Claims; U.S. Court of Military Appeals, U.S. Court of Military Review; the U.S. Tax Court; and the California state courts. Mr. Holmes sits as a Settlement Mediator for the State of California Court of Appeals – Fourth District and the Riverside Superior Court. Mr. Holmes serves as a Judge Pro Tem for the Riverside Superior Court. Mr. Holmes serves as an Arbitrator for the Riverside Superior Court and the Riverside County Bar Association Dispute Resolution Service. Mr. Holmes is a member of the American and Riverside County Bar Associations. Mr. Holmes has served on the Riverside County Bar Association Judicial Nomination Committee and as Chairman of its Disaster Preparedness / Response Committee. Mr. Holmes is a member and former Director of the Southern California Defense Counsel.

Mr. Holmes was involved in the U.S. Army for 32 years. Mr. Holmes retired as a Colonel and was awarded the Legion of Merit. On active duty he served as: U.S. Army White House Social Aide during the period 1968-1970; prosecutor then chief prosecutor during the period 1970- 1973; Special Courts Martial Judge in 1973; and litigation attorney for the U.S. Army assigned to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Francisco in 1974. In the Reserves, he served with the U. S Army Trial Judiciary as a Senior Military Judge and Chief, 72nd JAG (Military Judge) Detachment. Mr. Holmes also served as Commander, 81st JAG (International Law) Detachment and as Commander, 426th Civil Affairs Battalion (Prov.).

Mr. Holmes continues to be involved in numerous community activities in the Redlands area. Present and past volunteer experience include: Chairman, Board of Directors, First Congregational Church; Director, Kimberly Shirk Historical Foundation; Director, Redlands Symphony Association, Director, Air Force Village West and a Paul Harris Fellow in the Redlands Sunrise Rotary. Mr. Holmes resides in Redlands with his wife Mary Jo. Their daughter, Ashley, a cum laude graduate of Vanderbilt University, is a Senior Consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton in Washington, D.C. and has received her Master’s degree in Organizational Management at the George Washington University.
